In that old tune, by Jeannie C. Riley, there’s a bunch of narrow-minded, sexist, pea-brained idiots and bigots who dominate the lives and lifestyles of people in the community by bullying, name-calling, and general nastiness. That song ran up the charts in the late ’60s but is so appropriate to today’s political situation on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and especially as it applies to Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party of Canada. I sought out the song to listen to the lyrics again, to remind my why I liked the song then, and why I think it so fitting today.

this is just a little Peyton Place…
and you’re all Harper Valley hypocrites.
